Discover Basel – Through Art

We come across art in public spaces not only on urban squares and as part of fountains, but we can also be surprised by discovering it at unexpected places. Art in public spaces appears in various forms, can be intriguing as well as irritating and is not infrequently a source of conflict.

all around Basel | art in public spaces puts a spotlight on artworks that we might easily fail to notice or have long wanted to spend more time studying it. In eight short documentary films artists share their passion for art to be found outside of the walls of the museum and take us along for an exploratory expedition through the city.

all around Basel | art in public spaces is dedicated to telling all about art in different urban contexts and is aimed at youth, fans of Basel, and enthusiastic sightseers from near and far.

all around Basel | art in public spaces is an initiative of Basel artist, art educator and documentary filmmaker Marcel Scheible and is the result of creative collaboration between various artists/cultural professionals. Together with cameraman Aurelio Buchwalder and sound engineer Timo Schaub, Scheible meets with curators and artists in order to scout out selected artworks in the city and discuss the effects and circumstances of their creation.

Film editors are Christian Büttiker, Miro Widmer, and Mirjam Zimmermann. Voice overs are by Andreas Grötzinger and Anne Hody. External adviser: Christa Miranda. Animation is by Luca Bartulović and graphic designer is Noëmi Bachmann. Sound editor is Thomas Rechberger and color editor is Hannes Rüttimann.

Four Basel musicians composed the tracks: singer Jasmin Albash, beat tinkerer Audio Dope, jazz musician Charlotte Lang, and loop artist Neuhaus.

Basel Master’s students at the Institute Art and Design Education (IADE) of the HGK Basel are developing various outreach formats that will be published at as of spring 2024.
